A new initiative to encourage household composing in Charlesland, Greystones has been launched today by Cllr. Jennifer Whitmore and Stephen Donnelly, TD in partnership with BioBag Ireland. As part of the initiative, composting caddies and certified compostable bin liners, will be given free of charge to 50 residents of Charlesland.

Cllr. Whitmore said: “This initiative came about after some Charlesland residents approached me about how they could reduce potential costs associated with the new pay-by-weight bin charges. We’ve trialled a number of BioBag caddies in Charlesland already this year, and they have been really successful. Not only do people compost nearly all of their food waste but they see an increase in the amount of recycling they do also. So now we would like to roll the programme out to more households in the area and to make Charlesland a 100% composting zone.”

Donnelly said: “The pay-by-weight charges become law on July 1, so it makes sense to compost as much food waste as possible. Not only is it cheaper to dispose of food and garden waste in your brown bin, it is also much more environmental friendly. This is a simple way that we can help our pockets and environment.”

Rory Hogarty, Managing Director of BioBag Ireland and resident of Delgany, said: “Our MaxAir caddies are a no-mess, no-smell solution to collect food waste in your kitchen. You just line it with a BioBag certified compostable liner and they can be popped straight into your brown bin. We’re delighted to be able to work with the residents of Charlesland to help them send as much of their waste to compost as possible.”

If you are a resident of Charlesland and would like a free caddy to try out, please email whitmore.jennifer@gmail.com or sign up to Charlesland going Green on Facebook.com.
