Katie Taylor bid to become World Champion for a sixth consecutive time has ended this afternoon at the hands of French boxer Estelle Mossely. Taylor has bowed out of the World Championships in Astana after losing the semi-final in a 2-1 split decision.
Having already secured her spot in the Rio Olympics this summer, the Bray boxer’s focus turned to her sixth World Championship. Mossely took charge early in the first round and marked herself as a strong contender. The French lightweight had previously defeated Yana Alekseevna – Taylor’s Olympic qualifier conqueror.
Despite Mossely’s strong start, the first round went to Ireland’s golden girl. The second round was close but two judges made the decision to award it to Mossely. At the end of the third round all the cards read 10:9 to Taylor. The final round seemed almost too close to call but two judges called the round in favour of the French fighter. With scorecards level at 38-38, both awarded the fight to Mossely overruling the judge who had awarded all four rounds to Taylor.
