After a surprise season finale on Sunday night, Penny Dreadful fans are left shocked and confused following the announcement that the Showtime series will not be renewed for a fourth season.
The series was produced in Ardmore Studios in Bray and there are now questions being raised regarding the decision and its affects on jobs in the Bray area.
The new came early Monday morning when David Nevins, Showtime President and John Logan, Director of the series announced in a number of interviews that the show has been cancelled.
Penny Dreadful is a horror drama which is shown on Showtime, an American television network. The series surrounds a woman’s journey of faith and how she loses her god and then finds him again.
The season finale ended with the woman, Vanessa who is played by Eva Green finally sacrificing herself and reuniting with God. According to Nevins, it was Logan’s decision to end the series with the death of Green’s character. “John convinced me that this was the right end, and the right time to end,” said Nevins to Variety.
“The decision was made a while ago,” John Logan told TVLine. “I began shaping the third season thinking about all the characters and how I could lead them to a place that felt like a fitting conclusion.”
Nevins believes that warning viewers of the fate of season three would have been wrong and not the spirit of Penny Dreadful. “I think the show has a really passionate fan base and they’re going to be very emotional.” he told TVLine.
The Wicklow Voice reached out to Ardmore Studios for comment but no one was available.
