The campaign to Repeal the 8th Amendment has swiftly garnered momentum as of late, in the wake of the United Nations’ expression of ‘great concern’ regarding the rights of young women in Ireland.
Since 1983, three abortion referendums have been held in in Ireland. Many social commentators today argue that all three have been ineffective when it comes to delivering a viable solution, causing predictions that a fourth referendum is imminent.
The UN Human Rights Committee called on the Irish Government in June to repeal the 8th Amendment and reform its abortion laws, which the Committee has deemed ‘inhuman and degrading’.
An open public meeting on the subject of repealing the 8th Amendment is set to take place on Thursday, September 15th at 8pm in Greystones. Issues will be discussed by speakers Dr. Peadar O’Grady (Doctors for Choice), Deputy Bride Smyth TD (People Before Profit Alliance), and Gaye Edwards (Terminations for Medical Reasons).
