The men’s hockey World Cup has come to a close in the Netherlands following a brutal defeat of the host nation by Australia.
Australia retained their title in men’s field hockey in the Hague with a 6-1 win. Although the match began strong for the Netherlands when Jeroen Hertzberger opened scoring in the 14th minute. Australia dominated the remainder of the game, managing to keep possession and taking full advantage of penalty corners that came their way.
This marks Australia’s second World Cup win in four years.
Among the victorious Australian team is Bray-born Fergus Kavanagh who was also part of the team who won the title in the 2010 tournament in India. Kavanagh moved to Australia when he was a child but still has links to the area.
