Following a pager alert on 3.07pm on June 9, Arklow Lifeboat Ger Tigchlearr was launched to reports of a sailing vessel in distress approximately 3 miles east of Cahore Point.
In good sea conditions with dense fog and low visability, Arklow Lifeboat proceeded to the scene and located the casualty vessel and its solo skipper a short time later.
It was established that the vessel had become entangled in fishing gear.
Arklow Lifeboats small rescue rib was deployed with 2 crew members aboard and the crew assisted the single-handed sailor in freeing the entanglement.
The experienced skipper of the 10 metre Dutch Vessel then thanked Arklow Lifeboat crew for their assistance and was happy to proceed on his passage North.
Arklow Lifeboat returned to station.
Arklow RNLI’s crew for todays shout were: Eamonn Kavanagh, Aiden Downey, Roger Tyrell, Eddie McElheron, Craig O’Reilly and Scott Heaney.
Following the incident, Mark Corcoran, Community Safety Officer said: “With June 9 marking the launch of RNLI’s Respect the Water campaign, Arklow RNLI urge all persons going on or in the water to prepare yourself for the power of the water-whatever your activity”.
